Band vs DJ

Before you begin to debate which you would prefer between a Band and a DJ, ask yourself what exactly is the role of music at your event. Sometimes, you might not need either of the two while other times you might actually need both. If you are just going to have casual background music in the background, it may be possible to bring a laptop or a CD player, press play and you’re all set. For the band effect, you might be able to get away with someone signing along to a back up CD. The truth is, good DJs and bands come at a price, so it’s best to improvise where possible. However, if your event demands some professional music, here are some things to consider before making your choice.

THE AUDIENCE: Remember it’s not just about you, so you have to cater to the general listening tastes of the audience. The oldies prefer the African sounds coming from a live band than a remixed version of Wande Coal’s latest hit on I-tunes which would appeal more to the younger generation. That being said a good DJ or versatile band should be able to judge and juggle the music to fit all ears concerned.

For a personal touch, go with a band. Bands make a lot of money on the night by remixing songs and creating new ones to incorporate the praises and stories of the guests which lead to the guests moving their feet and spraying some cash, a win-win situation for all.

For variety, go with a DJ. DJs can play just about any music so far it is available in some recorded format whether vinyl or online. The DJ can prepare in advance and update their collections as necessary. Worst case scenario, your mp 3 player or laptop should have those hard-to find songs for the DJ to use.

Create the atmosphere with either of the two. The band or DJ are only there to enhance the experience, therefore should complement the other components of the event. They themselves should not be the centre of attention except of course it’s a concert.  So it’s important you factor them in your overall plan to avoid unnecessary clashes and it is only courteous to provide them with refreshments free of charge.

To have the best of both worlds, there needs to be some synergy and a meeting beforehand is vital. Whether they’ll play in sessions or alongside each other should be decided way in advance and if there are any last minute changes, these should be communicated to both parties as soon as possible.

Get value for your money by finding out if they operate on a strict per hour rate or a general flat fee. Be honest and realistic about your budget and don’t expect the likes of King Sunny Ade, Shuga Band, DJ Jimmy Jatt to collect chicken change, expect to pay BIG money if you’re not related to them. But not to worry there are many bands and DJs out there to match any budget.
