TRICKS OF THE CLICKS
People take pictures for many reasons, ranging from sentimental motivations to eminently practical concerns. Taking pictures may be an art form, a family hobby or a historical responsibility. Similarly, looking at pictures puts us in touch with the past, keeps us informed of news events and allows us to appreciate artistry. As a photographer, I have come to understand that a good, well captured, developed and beautifully presented picture is all my clients seek. However, each client has their own specific tastes and peculiarities, these all form the client’s brief. One of the major challenges photographers encounter when covering an event is their inability to grasp the needs of their clients. From experience, I know that 70% of my job is done when I have a basic understanding of my client’s brief. Understanding the Brief You have to ask your client to explain in clear terms what he or she wants. You also have to ask questions about venue, length of time your services are required, presentation of deliverables i.e. digital, online, high resolution etc? Then there is size and colour as well? Give them the opportunity to describe specifically and in detail as to what they are looking for and how much they are willing to pay. When you have both established the brief and payment method and plan, then each party is responsible for fulfilling their own side of the bargain. As a photograph, your responsibility includes having the right equipment, sorting out lighting, external aid and anything else that is necessary in realizing the brief. Always plan for the unexpected. Any client paying good money for your services would expect the best and not excuses.
Effective Coverage There are various styles employed by photographers in covering an event but I believe the most important and most effective style is the photo documentation style. This requires telling a story of the event from activation to deactivation. This has to be done in such a way that an absent individual or a layman can picture and understand the progression of that event, just by looking at the pictures It is also means your client has more pictures to choose from giving you the opportunity to show not just range but versatility. Lastly Make the terms of your transaction as plain as possible. Write out all the terms agreed including payment and services and both of you should sign.
